Text 3
When he came home that night, everything was normal enough. His wife was making tea in the kitchen; Jane was laying the table; David was sitting by the window reading some book or other; his slippers were warming by the fire, and his pipe was in its usual place. And yet Albert Jones knew that there was something wrong about the house. The children were looking at him in a strange way. Mr. Jones was just going to ask what the matter was when he noticed that the TV set was not working. At tea Jane told him that she had wanted to see Children’s Hour and had switched on the set, but nothing had happened. «We’ll soon find out,» said her father and switched on the electric light. The light came on. «It’s the set,» he said. «There’s nothing for it, children, no TV today.» It was too late to go to the pictures. The last house had started long ago. «Let’s have a talk about something,» Mother said. But there was nothing to talk about. The children were out of sorts all evening and went to bed early.
All except Mr. Jones. He sat down in a comfortable armchair. «How quiet it is tonight! A good thing was that the plug had come out of the set!» He smiled to himself, lit his pipe, and began reading his favourite book.
